Fairfield Inn JFK Airport ***
15608 Rockaway Blvd., Jamaica, NY, USA

The lack of decent hotels close to JFK Airport in New York is scandalous for a country and a city that is world famous and that carries such a huge international traveling public. However, we have found one hotel that is a touch above the standard comfort, is clean, well maintained and offers a decent place to roost, eat modestly and prepare the next leg of your journey in their business center computer room.

The hotel is close to JFK Airport but not on its campus. The only one that is takes pets but is so run down and shabby, we dare not mention its name for fear that one of you might just be tempted to stay there. The facilities are fairly basic at the Fairfield Inn, but all needs are addressed even if breakfast is served on paper plates with plastic utensils. A hotel shuttle runs you back and forth to the airport, at least to Station C (Federal Circle) that is the pick-up/drop-off for most hotel shuttles since the terminals are so crowded that we are required to use the overhead tramway to move from terminal to terminal and terminal to car hire and hotels.

The reception staff are attentive if not always outwardly friendly, and always correct. A bit difficult to understand sometimes when you call to let them know you have arrived at the pick up point and you are on your cell phone with jets screaming overhead. The shuttle drivers are very friendly and helpful and filled with useful information. The shuttles do not run 24 hours so do plan your connections ahead with the hotel reception.

The neighbor hood in which most of these airport hotels find themselves restricted to, are light industrial and airport services oriented. Not a neighborhood where joggling and long walks are encouraged. There is little to no shopping available except the odd corner mini-grocery. But the hotel has vending machines for drinks, snacks and even aspirin, tummy settlers and mini-umbrellas. They are small but do try to do a lot with what they have.

The rooms are clean and pleasantly furnished. The windows open! Gods be praised! But depending on what side of the hotel your room faces, you may find traffic noise or loading noise. For a 24/7 international airport, work never stops. So also ask at reception or when booking for a room facing the back side and as high as possible.

They do have a fitness center with treadmills that will be a lot safer than a walk around the block.
We enjoyed a dinner. Breakfast is more rudimentary but offers do-it-yourself waffles, cereals, cold hard boiled eggs, yogurts, breads and rolls and tea and coffee eaten on aforesaid paper plates.

All in all, a comfortable if basic place to stay at reasonable prices if you have to stay at JFK. The alternatives are to risk the traffic on a coming and going by staying in a plethora of hotels available in New York City itself.
