"The Spies Who Stayed In The Sun"
A Hotel with a History

Peter and Linda D'Aprix 2001

Palácio Estoril Hotel was the "spy nest" of the Americans in WWII Lisbon. This grand hotel, now a member of the Great Hotels of the World, was adopted by the OSS as their headquarters. The Nazi spy headquarters used to be next door at Hotel do Parque which exists no longer. Today there is nothing to show the skull duggery that went on half a century ago.

Instead, we have the culinary art of one Orlando Esteves, executive chef and director of the world class "Four Seasons Restaurant" connected to the five star hotel "Palácio Estoril Hotel" outside of Lisbon in the Estoril. Spying is the furthest thing from his mind. He is only interested in bringing the finest cuisine to both his restaurant "The Four Seasons" and to the hotel in which it is housed the Palácio Estoril Hotel.

The Palácio Estoril Hotel has been a top hotel for over 50 years from before the second world war. The clientele are well heeled, traveled, and mostly foreign. The English have been enjoying the sunny climate of Portugal for decades, in higher concentrations in recent years as the tourist resorts of Spain no longer represent the bargain vacations they were in the 1960's. The English represent his largest single group of patrons, but this international hotel with its years of history caters to a wide diversity of people from many different home lands.

Set in the beach and fishing community outside of downtown Lisbon and next to the casino, the Palácio Estoril Hotel and it's restaurant find everyone from summer vacationers enjoying the hotel's proximity to the beach to seminars for large international corporations vying for reservations in this hotel of traditional opulence, high ceilings, chandeliers with twinkling crystals and Louis XIII chairs which, happily, has had an interior facelift since our visit in 1999 when modern decore clashed with the lovely traditional style. Today, both the public rooms and the rooms and suites have been brought into line with the traditional feel of the hotel but with a fashionable twist.

This hotel was born into the grand hotel era with huge public rooms, stories high and spacious bedrooms and suites.

Despite being located in the Estoril outside of the major city of Lisbon, the "Palácio Estoril Hotel" and its showcase restaurant the "Four Seasons Restaurant", is a very sophisticated, big city establishment serving a sophisticated clientele. But since it is a hop, skip and a jump from the beach, this can be a family holiday hotel as well even if it is a bit stiff for kids.
