Welcome to Portugal

You will either love or hate the Portuguese style of cooking. Traditionally, the food is mainly meat, cooked within an inch of its life with the main ingredient as salt. This is a taste they developed from the salt used in preserving the meat before refrigeration and has become a firm part of the national taste.

The finer restaurants go easier on the salt and we have recommended some here. Our visit was limited to the mid and southern parts of Portugal. We hope these hotels and restaurants will be to your liking.

This historic hotel is located in the Estoril, the beach community just west of Lisdon. It was the base for allied intellegence during WWII and today offers some of the best food in Portugal at its restaurant "The Four Seasons"

Just two steps from the beach on the Algarve coast across from Africa sits the Dona Filipa. On the inland side is the world class San Lorenzo Golf Club. A great holiday spot with good, satisfying international food. It won't winn any awards, but will not bring any complaints either.
