Restaurant "Les Remparts", Château de la Chèvre d'Or, Eze Village, Alpes-Maritime, France.

A Restaurant with one of the world's greatest views.

Peter and Linda D'Aprix 2001

Restaurant "Les Remparts" (The Ramparts Restaurant) has a panoramic view of the Mediterranean sea and the coast in one direction to St. Tropez and in the other to Monte Carlo. It is one of the ultimate fair weather dining spots of all time. It is the second restaurant of hotel "Chateau de la Chèvre d’Or" offering lighter and simpler fare than their 2 Michelin star restaurant "La Chèvre d'Or" which resides over the stone chamber that was once a violin recital room and today houses the hotel's bar.

The flagstone terrace of the hotel supplies the dining area. While some kitchen facilities are shared with its big brother upstairs, the restaurant exists in its own right with its own de luxe brasserie style of light Provençal modern cuisine. Like the other restaurant in the village owned and run by the hotel, "Le Grill du Château", Les Remparts benefits from the large buying power of several restaurants buying together to gather the freshest and the best of local ingredients which are then prepared in deceptively simple recipes that are rich in taste but light in ingredients.

Lunch is the main meal served here both to guests at the hotel and to anyone else who wants to enjoy the fabulous view while enjoying lunch.

If you are a guest of the hotel you can also enjoy the terrace as a breakfast spot. If you just drop by for a bite, then the restaurant is just open for lunch. It is not open for dinner. Since this is exclusively served outside, the restaurant will only be open on days fair enough to serve.

We started with an excellent Gaspacho of fresh vegetables and fruit topped with a quenelle of sheep's cheese and fresh basil. The combination of tastes worked very well together. Other starters might include a mille feuille of tomato and ricotta with a salad of herbs and Iberian ham or perhaps a fresh salad of "Terre et Mer" (earth and sea). While there are usually six starters, the main dishes are restricted to two fish choices and two meat choices.

The Panaché de poissons de la mer was a fish medley with Rouget (a small Mediterranean red fish), a white fish and a couple of jumbo shrimp in a bouillabaisse broth with cubed fresh vegetables. It was superb. The other choice was a Pageot with the tender violet artichokes so typical to Provence. Duck was served in small slices marinated in gentle spices served with a fondant of fennel and gnocchis. Their Provence lamb was tender. It was served with broiled tomato and a galette de panisse. The dessert cart was filled with delectables designed to stretch out the meal and take full advantage of the view.

The restaurant also serves sandwiches during the afternoon along with other light snacks.

The light constantly changes in Provence except in the summer doldrums. With the changes the sky and sea changes too. The canvas is even more interesting when the sun is not full in a cloud free sky. The colors are most interesting when there are clouds of all types floating above. So if you are a guest at the hotel or if you are just driving down the coast at the lunch hour, take advantage of this gem of a spot.

To get to Eze Village, take the "Moyenne Corniche". When you arrive at the village, you will see the big parking lot. You must put money into the honorary parking machine at the center of the car park then put the ticket that is time stamped on your dash board so the parking meter maid will not give you a parking fine.
Walk up the street that goes up hill to the entrance arch of the walled village. Follow the lanes constantly leading to the left. You will find the "Le Grill du Château", also a "Château de la Chèvre d'Or" restaurant just on the other side of an arch on the left.Keep on going about 100 yards. You enter the restaurant through the bar of hotel "Château de la Chèvre d'Or.
