Restaurant "Le Grill du Chateau", Eze Village, Alpes-Maritime, France.

A light, delicious everyday cuisine filled with the
tastes of Provence and a love of the sea.

Peter and Linda D'Aprix 2001

The cuisine of "Le Grill du Chateau" is refined, filled with the flavors of Provence and heavily loaded with fresh produce. Hidden in a narrow street in the village of Eze that also leads to that lovely hotel "Chateau de la Chèvre d'Or", has a spectacular view of the Mediterranean that you can enjoy as you eat the exceptional cuisine. Exposed beams, tapestries and authentic Renaissance moldings that adorn the walls of stone immortalize the distant past, that of this small medieval village perched on the mountain.

"Le Grill du Chateau" specializes in dishes exuding the tastes of Provence and dedicated, though not exclusively, to sea food. The style is modern bistro with its roots in tradition but its interpretation is all "today". The dining room is small and intimate. Its plate glass windows give a view down the hills of the coast toward Monte Carlo with glimpses of the sea off to the right.

Chilled Zuchinni Soup with local olive oil and a hint of Pesto.

We enjoyed enormously the chilled zuchinni soup. Also the generous salad of fresh vegetables was light and refreshing with a delicious dressing of local olive oil and bitter greens.

The fish was cleanly prepared and very good. They serve a lovely filet of "Rougets" flambéed in Pastis with baked garlic cloves. Another filet dish was of Loup, a white fish, served with a tomato cream with anchovies. I had an excellent Magret de Canard au Miel (breast of duck in honey sauce) with was served with an ample mound of lightly sauteed vegetables. The lamb was braised and served with puréed garlic confit.

Desserts were varied and were making much of the fresh red berries that were at their peak when we were there in the Spring.

To get to Eze Village, take the "Moyenne Corniche". When you arrive at the village, you will see the big public parking lot. You must put money into the honorary parking machine at the center of the car park then put the ticket that is time stamped on your dash board so the parking meter maid will not give you a parking fine.
Walk up the street that goes up hill to the entrance arch of the walled village. Follow the lanes constantly leading to the left. You will find the "Grill" just on the other side of an arch. If you find yourself at the "Chateau de la Chèvre d'Or" you have gone about 100 yards too far.
